It’s no secret that there is a large deficit of women in the tech industry. We have all heard the shocking (and sadly very true) statistic that only 24% of tech careers are held by women. Unfortunately, this isn’t changing either as just 15.8% of the UK’s current generation of engineering and technology undergraduates are female.
A study by Economic Co-operation and Development found girls lack the confidence in their abilities to pursue this path (despite their school results being as good as – or better than – those achieved by boys), so we need to give them role models and hands on experience to show them their potential.
At Girls Code Too UK, we care deeply about addressing this gender imbalance and we believe that girls can and will thrive in the technology industry if we can show them how great it can be.
